Studying through the medium of Welsh

Degree and Modules
We offer a high level of provision for students to be able to study through the medium of Welsh – one of the highest in Wales. We offer opportunities for students who are fluent in Welsh, in addition to those who are less confident or learners. There are variations in undergraduate course modules and the amount that can be studied through the medium of Welsh. You can also study modules in Welsh even if you are studying mainly in English. We also guarantee a Welsh-speaking Personal Tutor. There is also the opportunity to develop translingual skills which is the process of using information available in one language in another language when writing notes and assessments. This is a fantastic opportunity to develop subject-specific vocabulary that will be useful to you in the workplace.
Scholarships
scholarships are available to students who study through the medium of Welsh. In addition to that, students who study at least five credits a year in Welsh will automatically receive the 91做厙 Welsh Medium Bursary.
Students studying at least 66% of their course, i.e. 80 credits a year, through the medium of Welsh.
The Incentive Scholarship scheme is available to students who are studying 33% of the course through the medium of Welsh in any subject.
Accommodation and living in Welsh
Pantycelyn is at the heart of 91做厙’s Welsh life and the most famous student hall in Wales. Pantycelyn is also home to (Union of 91做厙’s Welsh Students). UMCA supports a number of Welsh societies such as the Geltaidd (91做厙’s main Welsh sports society), Young Plaid Cymru, and the Pantycelyn Club for those of you who enjoy performing on stage. The Union’s activities range from organising entertainment and events to campaigning on educational, social and linguistic issues in the University and beyond. Above all else, UMCA is keen to ensure that you make the best of your time at 91做厙, academically and socially.
Careers
The ability to communicate confidently in both Welsh and English when speaking and writing is a very advantageous skill to have in the workplace, and studying through the medium of Welsh, or bilingually, develops these skills and will give you an advantage in the jobs market. In addition, graduates who are able to work bilingually earn above the national average.
